The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness which easily spreads through close contact, coughing, and sneezing. The symptoms of the disease can range from mild to severe and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes that symptoms may appear between 2 to 14 days of exposure to the virus. Everyone should take precautions to minimize the risk of exposure as cases increase within the United States. Below are some techniques recommended by the CDC to help reduce the risk of infection.
- Avoid touching your face, especially around your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Frequently disinfect touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use
an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Stay up to date on vaccinations, including the flu vaccine.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick, and maintain at least six feet of distance from anyone exhibiting
- Stay home when you are sick.
- The CDC recommends that people wear cloth face coverings when going to public areas where social distancing is difficult to maintain, such as grocery stores and pharmacies.
- The CDC guidelines are in place for both people showing symptoms of the COVID-19 and healthy people who may be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus.
- Cloth coverings can be made from home using household supplies.
- Surgical masks, or N-95 respirators, should be reserved for healthcare workers treating those with COVID-19.
